Got a groupon for Yang Di Chun and decided to check it out with a group of friends as we love Korean BBQ. The first thing we noticed is that the menu is large and has a lot of unique dishes (such as paddywack, pig ears, and bull penis) but also plenty of staples such as sweet and sour chicken and fried rice. They definitely could use a little description of some of the dishes on the menu.
The BBQ dishes are just the meat and don't come with anything. All tables do get two small Korean appetizers (mung beans and pickled raddish). Most Korean bbq places I have been to usually give a few more of these as part of the experience. A few of us asked for a side of rice and were not charged, so that's a plus. Also note that the BBQ dishes are made in back and it's not the sort of Korean BBQ with the boolpan hot plate where you cook the meat yourself.
We ordered a Bimimbop (which I didn't see on the menu but they said they could make it), a tofu soup, BBQ quail and sweet and sour spare ribs. All were good but one example of why the descriptions would have been helpful is that the tofu soup had various sea food in it so if you were expecting a vegetarian soup, that's not the case.
The food came out super fast after we ordered and we were given complementary dumplings at the end. I believe the dumplings are part of their grand opening so it may not be around forever.
All in all, food is very good. 2 places for improvement are:
1. Some descriptions of food on the menu
2. More small plate appetizers as the dishes are reasonably expensive and this would improve the experience if you just order a BBQ meat dish
This place is SO good.
Was almost empty when we came in, so we were immediately greeted and seated.
Ordered a big pot of tomato and egg soup. For $8, you can't go wrong. Would highly recommend mixing some rice into a bowl of that soup, makes it taste just that much better.
As this place is a bbq place, we got the lamb bbq and oh man was that worth the $20. So flavorful, especially with the salt/pepper/something on the side that you swirl it in.
Various other dishes, all authentic, all fantastic, and at ~$13 per dish it's pretty good value. They even threw in a free thing of vegetarian dumplings. Topped it all off with some delicious barley tea.
Place is clean, definitely would not consider it a hole in the wall by any means. Service is excellent.
Will 100% come back again!
Everything was delicious. Eggplant, lamb skewers and egg yolk lobster! Great food. Def will be coming back.
Most authentic food we have had since moving here from Singapore. The tofu on sizzling plate was superb. The pork and green beans special was unlike anything we had before. Tasty and exotic. Also loved the complimentary pickles.
Very authentic food with really great service! It was very busy and I was dinning alone but they still took such great care of me. I ordered the beef tendon kabobs and lamb soup. Someone came over to check on me and explained the soup I was eating was a recipe from his home village in North China. I can't wait to come back and try more items off the massive menu.
Quite literally the best Chinese restaurant in Syracuse. Thank you eggplant is amazing.
This is my third time in this new Chinese restaurant. Serving portions a big. Ideal for eating and sharing in a Chinese restaurant. Large menu, including items that are rarely seen in this area. Attentive , courteous service.able have pricey because of booth seating.if you do not want your food to be spicy you have to notify the waitstaff
This is my first authentic Chinese barbecue experience. It was amazing. I had, by far, the best customer service I've had in Syracuse, NY. Because I'm new to the cuisine, my waiter explained the process to order and explained dishes to us. I ordered the squid, short rib, and beef intestine kebabs with a side of eggplant. The eggplant is full of garlic and melts in your mouth. I highly recommend it. The kebabs were all well seasoned and tender. It's reasonably priced and portion sizes are large.
super good Chinese food.
Best Chinese restaurant in Syracuse.
Atmosphere is good. The lamb bbq is much better than other Chinese bbq restaurant.
I don't think that they should use plastic straws. I'm not gonna say things bad because I gave it 5 stars even though that is the first thing that I said.
What I got I liked a lot. My parents had a smile when they were eating there too. But I didn't try a lot of the things they had on the menu. I would recommend it. And it's about perfect. That's all.
Hurrah! Another new Asian restaurant on Erie Blvd! This place is a great addition to 'Cuselandia. I was on my way to Olive Garden on New Year's Day when I passed by the "Grand Opening" sign for this place. I swerved into the parking lot and cancelled my Olive Garden wait list reservation. I saw the BBQ sign and thought it'd be a Korean BBQ place but it was Chinese BBQ. I got the beef kebabs ($20), chicken & broccoli, and spicy chicken. The dishes came with a side of rice that had yellow speckles in it (corn), two dipping powders for the kebabs (had cumin in it), and a side of steamed broccoli with carrots and bean sprouts. You get free barley tea as well. Our waitress was really friendly. I thought the beef kebabs were really yummy and were seasoned with a unique flavor. The spicy chicken dish had fried chicken, star anise, bay leaves and red chili. I cannot decide which one was my favorite dish. The chicken and broccoli dish reminded me of something I'd eat at home with my parents. The beef skewers were my fiancee's favorite. It had a good proportion of fat/meat. I loved the chicken and broccoli dish. Outside of beef kebabs, they have lamb, chicken, shrimp, intestines, and much more. The interior's really spacious and has a lot of private booths with rice-paper-looking trim. There is a large parking lot. I am looking forward to coming here again to try more things off of their menu.
Yang Di Chun can be a good choice if you want to try some northern Chinese food with specialties in stews and barbecues. It opens recently in this January with brand new interior decorations and furniture in classical Chinese style. Braised chicken with mushrooms is the most popular dish. Succulent chicken is stewed with tea mushrooms in their homemade soy sauce soup. Crispy pancakes and bean vermicelli are also served with this dish. Stir-fried seasonal vegetables and barbeques are also fresh. Pickled turnips and bean sprouts are free appetizers.
The location is a little bit hard to find. The restaurant is on Erie Boulevard East. They do not have the name at the entrance. Corn pancakes are coated with too much flour. Some dishes taste good but too greasy.
This is the closest you can get to an Flushing NY menu. Where else can you get a great Bulls penis.
Ambience is ok, parking plentiful
If your looking for something different from your standard syracuse asian fare, this is the place to go.
So excited to try a new Chinese restaurant! The waitress very nice to show us which food is good and which one u may not like it ! It's a huge menu with a lot of choices nice staff and clean !
Another great addition to the Syracuse area authentic Chinese restaurant selection. The menu is full of authentic Chinese dishes that are on par with what you would find if you go to flushing queens (new world mall). They had jelly fish salad which made my day. Service is great and friendly. No need to drive 5 hours for authentic Chinese food. Pure Winner BBQ Please keep doing what you do.
This place is so so so good. The staff was really nice and friendly to us when we came here. It was our first time trying northern Chinese food, and we were not disappointed. We got the small ribs and kidney bbq and both dishes were delicious!! Too bad that we do not live near here: otherwise, we would be regulars here. Can't wait to come back to Syracuse and eat here again in the future.
Yep! Another 5 stars from me here. The food was okay but the staffs were so friendly. They have variety food selection. I wasn't enjoy the foods so much as the way my Chinese friend does, since he said it very authentic northern Chinese. The beef skewered was fabulous. I would go there again to give another try.
Really excellent Chinese food. The waitress told us had the owner had a place in Flushing before.
The lamb skewer
The eggplant in garlic oil. (This is the best dish there, the eggplant is deep fried and then put in garlic oil).
Candy sweet potato (order this at the end since it's like dessert).
Good but not my fav:
The lamb chops
Beef in chili oil
Definitely not my fav:
The beef belly. For some reason I thought it was like pork belly and it was going to be a fatty cut of meat. But it's actual stomach.
Anyways, truly an excellent and flavorful restaurant.
In a word, amazing. The menu is enormous, with a huge variety of dishes. If you are less adventurous, there are plenty of typical Chinese items, such as eggplant in garlic sauce. But if you are adventurous, there are so many incredible choices, including tripe, pork belly, pig ears, sea cucumbers, and so on.
We had the daily special kebob, beef with Korean bar b q sauce, which was absolutely delicious and the meat was so tender.
I had the preserved pork with beans (pea pods) which was delivered steaming hot with a very light sauce.
My husband had the shredded pork, extra hot. It was very tasty and again the meat was tender.
We also had eggplant fried rice, which was good, but not especially flavorful.
The prices aren't cheap, but the food was good and the portions are generous. We can't wait to go back and try more of their many, many interesting dishes.
Really great spot. Comparable to Red Chili.
I didn't order the more authentic dishes cause I had my kids with me, but what we had was very tasty. And the staff is fantastic. Very helpful, generous, welcoming and prompt.
The sesame chicken had great flavor and wasn't overly heavy. Might've been nice to have some broccoli with it. The double cooked pork had good spice to it and was even better when combined with the side dish of pickled marinated radish. The beef and potato dish is a stew like Chinese dish. Good flavors. The potatoes were cooked perfectly. The beef a little tough but that's cause of the cut and style of dish I think.
They gave us a delicious plate of steamed pork and crab dumplings for free! Those were great.
The lo mein was ok. Nothing special there. But kids loved it.
I hope to go back soon and try the more authentic dishes and the grilled kebabs.
Take the time to check this place out. You'll enjoy it.
Wow! Excellent service, portion size, atmosphere and price! We will return and we are so excited for this establishment. Our server was so detailed and helpful and considerate of our interests. We had two of the exceptional specials-Bi-Bim-Bop and the Stewed Spicy Chicken. My husband and I visit this area annually as we travel from our home in New England area to our hometown of Cleveland and we look forward to visiting again soon!
I'm so glad my boyfriend and I tried this place! Seriously HUGE menu with plenty of options. Word to the wise, though, if you're a picky eater or looking for "Chinese food", probably best to head for the nearest buffet. This place has some of the most delicious authentic food I've ever had. Staff is very friendly and conscientious- although we did have to flag them down for the check. They give you plenty of space to eat and relax, and provide you with palate cleansers of orange slices after the meal, a touch I really appreciated.
Food is pretty expensive, but the portions are huge.
Quail kebabs are TINY
Staff are eager to please
Come for the experience, stay for the gigantic menu
There's bull penis on said gigantic menu (let me know if you're brave enough to try it!)
Eating at Chinese restaurants is always a gamble. You never know if your chicken is going to be some kind of mystery meat, if you're food is just full of straight MSG, or if you'll end up getting crappy fortunes in your fortune cookies at the end of the meal. In a temporary lapse of judgment, I decided to take a gamble and come to Yang Di Chun BBQ. My experience was surprisingly good overall and the food did not lower itself to typical American Chinese restaurants. Here's the shakedown on a possibly safe go-to Chinese restaurant.
Yang Di Chun is one of the newest Chinese restaurants focusing on BBQ in Syracuse. Admittedly, I have not tried many Chinese restaurants in Syracuse because they generally give me very "cheap" vibes. Now with that comment you may think that I'm sort of stuck up person, who wants all of their Chinese restaurants to look like a high-end, snobby, foodie-centric establishments. You're half right my friend. I'm a stuck up person who wants to go a Chinese restaurant with authentically delicious food. The rest is bonus. Yang Di Chun managed to wow me on the food and authenticity factor, which is why I think it's a great go-to restaurant.
I'd say that they definitely do Szechuan food, Hot Pot, and some of the traditional Chinese-American dishes right. The Kung Pao Chicken was well-seasoned and surprisingly not as unhealthy as some other places cook it (i.e. deep fried). The shredded fried beef, had lots of crunchy chilis, slices of scallions, and nice thin pieces of beef. All of our food came with complimentary steamed rice and tea. Despite enjoying the meal, I did feel like we paid a bit of an arm and leg for the amount of food we got. I don't really mind this if it's quality, but that is something for you to consider before coming here. Honestly, if they dropped the prices a few dollars and kept quality the same then I'd give them something closer to 4.5.
It's also worth noting that one of the most dishes halfway through had a strange minty taste to it. I couldn't quite put my finger on what it had been seasoned with, but I felt fine after the meal and it didn't hurt the flavor of the dish too much. It will take trying their food out again to determine if something was off or if that taste was a normal part of the dish. That being said, this is the place I'd recommend as a safe choice to satisfy your Chinese cravings. No need to worry about accidentally eating horse here!
Found this hidden gem during our memory day trip, it is New Northern Chinese & Korean dishes/BBQ restaurant in Syracuse.
We ordered fried pork, stir fried vege mix (egg plant, pepper, potato), lamb Kabab, cabbage garlic with glass noodle, beef fried noodle. And we were even given leek & pork dumpling for free as a first time visitor. Pork is fried perfect, crispy, sweet and sour. Lamb kabab BBQ is different as dry seasoned with cumin and chili, with more dry seasoning on the side, quite authentic. The vege dishes were also well cooked. Some of them may appeared to be greasy, but taste great just to be aware.
Service was excellent, try to accommodate us as much as they can, sometimes it means a lot with little one in the family. Highly recommend to visit if you want to try something different while visiting town here.
